The Ehukai Pillbox trail is a popular loop trail located on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, near Haleiwa. To find the trailhead, plug “Sunset Beach Elementary School” into your GPS. There are restrooms and parking in the school parking lot. Note that if school is in session, you may have difficulty securing a spot in the lot.
The day we hiked this trail, it had rained shortly before, making it muddy and slippery. It is steep in certain spots, but thankfully, there are rope sections that helped me a great deal!
It is a relatively short hike at 2.1 miles, but the uphill sections made it a great workout. The kids were hardly phased by it, but it was a bit challenging for me at times.
The trail is pretty shady and the views were beautiful! The kids enjoyed a snack and some playtime near the first pillbox in a clearing with large rocks ironwood trees. We even found a shelter that someone had made!
We only hiked to the first pillbox, but I have heard that if you go a little farther, the second pillbox offers even greater views to enjoy!
All in all, this was a fun hike to do with family and friends and we hope to visit again soon — maybe on a drier day so we don’t have to contend with the mud!
